Gorgeous descriptions, fascinating characters, just the right level of coincidence and strangeness, with the just the right seasoning of literary references—enough for both expert and beginner… it’s a sumptuous feast of a tale, and an absorbing look at a man who’d rather not know or remember why he hurts until the answers break in on him. Love and recovery take time, like reading, and this novel might heal many hurts with its quiet wisdom of books, waters, sky and sea. It’s a beautiful novel that leaves you beautifully satisfied. And it has cats! Disclosure: I couldn’t resist the words “literary apothecary” on the back cover so I asked for this for Christmas.

Lovely novel- the aspect that motivated me to post a review was the similarities in feel to One Hundred Years Of Solitude, a long time favorite. I enjoyed Monsieur Perdu's point of view, as well as the descriptive writing and intriguing storyline. Definitely a unique reading experience- the story feels at once like a fresh take and a timeless tale.

A unique book about a rather common topic - lost love. Jean Perdu loses his love Manon and mourns this loss for twenty years before he learns of a truth about the loss. He sets sail on a book barge to heal people through books that he suggests - a book apothecary. Unfortunately he can never heal himself. An interesting read.

A lovely, lyrical novel that I felt bogged down a bit in the middle. Yet still, it leaves me with a good feeling and an impression that I have traveled a delightful journey of the senses.
