There are so many aspects of this novel to love, but perhaps the best part is how truly unique the premise and magic system are. The entire book is filled with whimsical descriptions/prose about tea. Seriously, this book is a love letter to the art of tea and tea making. Characters are true-to-life, fallible, and representative of their ages (often forgotten in YA fantasy). Ning feels real. She's strong but she's not superhuman! I really appreciated her mixed emotions: she enjoyed the luxuries of being in the palace but never forgot that it was at the cost of so many others. I also felt like this book handled grief and loss very well. Plus, its a duology!! It's the perfect in between of a standalone and a huge fantasy series :) Recommended By Charlotte S., Powells.com
I immediately fell in love with this unforgettably unique debut (first in a duology) from Judy I. Lin. Young teamaker Ning is determined to join the competition to choose the next shénnóng-shi (a master of the magical art of tea) of the Imperial court. Ning cares more about the favor granted to the winner; she’s determined to save her sister, suffering from a poisoned tea that killed their mother. But that poison is part of a larger plot, and Ning finds herself (and a handsome stranger) in the center of a fight for the throne. Recommended By Madeline S., Powells.com

Judy I. Lin's sweeping debut A Magic Steeped in Poison, first in a duology, is sure to enchant fans of Adrienne Young and Leigh Bardugo.
I used to look at my hands with pride. Now all I can think is, These are the hands that buried my mother.
For Ning, the only thing worse than losing her mother is knowing that it's her own fault. She was the one who unknowingly brewed the poison tea that killed her — the poison tea that now threatens to also take her sister, Shu.
When Ning hears of a competition to find the kingdom's greatest shennong-shi — masters of the ancient and magical art of tea-making — she travels to the imperial city to compete. The winner will receive a favor from the princess, which may be Ning's only chance to save her sister's life.
But between the backstabbing competitors, bloody court politics, and a mysterious (and handsome) boy with a shocking secret, Ning might actually be the one in more danger.
