The Shining is a wonderful mash-up of stories: haunted house (the hotel is a really big house for the Torrance family), extra-sensory perception, family dynamics in an extreme isolation experience, full-on madness. This book has become part of our popular culture. It's still as scary as they come.

This is one of my favorite books. The story follows three police chiefs in a small Georgia town as they track a serial killer over 40 years. Originally intended as a stand-alone novel, Chiefs begins the story of Will Lee who is central to other novels, such as Grass Roots.
