"Many folks outside of rural America don't think of the regions as places of diversity & queerness; Rather, a monolithic stereotype of 'rednecks' or 'backwards people' may come to mind. There's this myth that people of color and queer people don't live and build communities in rural America. This display was lovingly put together to throw that myth into the mud. 🤠 As a proud queer from Kentucky, I wanted to show that some of the most creative, revolutionary, & down-right fun folks come from rural America, including renowned Black feminist bell hooks author of All About Love and Appalachian Elegy. ❤️⛰️ If you're interested in what life is like in rural America, put down that copy of Hillbilly Elegy and pick up something from our 'Y'all Means All' display!
